Uvarovite — The stone of rare abundance

For growth so fine it's almost too small to hold.

Uvarovite is the rarest of the common garnet species, and the only one that occurs in a genuinely consistent emerald green — the colour comes from chromium, the same element behind emerald's own green. It was first described in 1832 by the chemist Germain Henri Hess, who named it after Count Sergei Uvarov, a Russian statesman and mineral collector. It almost never forms crystals large enough to facet; instead it grows as a fine druzy coating of tiny, sparkling crystals across a host rock, usually chromite or serpentine.

The most historically significant source was a now-closed copper mine at Outokumpu, Finland, which supplied most of the specimens held in museum collections today. Russia's Ural Mountains remain a major modern source.

Uvarovite is worked with for abundance and quiet, steady growth — a reminder that value doesn't need to be large to be real. It sits with the heart.

Sheri chooses every piece by hand, cleanses it, and charges it before it's packed here on the Gold Coast.

The druzy coating is delicate — display rather than handle often."
