Stromatolites are fossilised layers built by colonies of cyanobacteria, among the very first life forms on earth, trapping fine sediment in thin sheets year after year until, over immense stretches of time, the layers built into solid rock. Some fossil stromatolites date back 3.5 billion years, making them among the oldest direct evidence of life anywhere on the planet — and remarkably, living stromatolites still form today in a handful of places, including Shark Bay in Western Australia.

Each polished slice reveals fine, wavy banding, a visible record of daily and seasonal growth laid down one microscopic layer at a time.
