Rutile is titanium dioxide, and it most often appears not as a standalone crystal but as fine golden needles growing through clear quartz, a combination known as rutilated quartz — the needles were once trapped mid-growth as the surrounding quartz crystallised around them. Beyond ornament, rutile has serious industrial importance as a primary source of titanium dioxide, the compound behind much of the world's white pigment and sunscreen.

The needles can run in a single direction or cross in dense, golden tangles, and no two pieces of rutilated quartz show quite the same pattern.

Rutile is worked with for clarity of direction — the needles themselves often read as a visual metaphor for a path already laid out. It sits with the solar plexus and crown.

Smoky quartz gets its brown-grey depth from natural radiation acting on aluminium impurities in the crystal over geological time. The shade runs from a faint tint to almost black — the darkest is sometimes called morion — and the best pieces still pass light.

It's the national gem of Scotland, where it's known as cairngorm after the mountains it comes from, and it's set into the hilt of ceremonial Highland dress to this day.
