Himalayan quartz comes from the ranges of northern India, Nepal and Pakistan, often above 4,000 metres. There's no machinery involved — the pockets are reached on foot during a narrow summer window, and the crystals are carried down the same way.

It tends toward exceptional clarity, and frequently carries inclusions from the surrounding rock: chlorite for green, hematite for red, or fine needles of rutile. Those inclusions aren't flaws. They're the mountain, still in the stone.

Himalayan quartz is worked with for clarity and for elevated perspective — the sense of seeing a situation from further back. It sits with the crown and all centres, as quartz generally does.

Smoky quartz gets its brown-grey depth from natural radiation acting on aluminium impurities in the crystal over geological time. The shade runs from a faint tint to almost black — the darkest is sometimes called morion — and the best pieces still pass light.

It's the national gem of Scotland, where it's known as cairngorm after the mountains it comes from, and it's set into the hilt of ceremonial Highland dress to this day.

Smoky quartz is worked with for grounding and for release — putting down what you've been carrying without shutting down with it. That's the distinction people draw between this and heavier protective stones: it steadies without numbing. It sits with the root.
