Sardonyx is banded chalcedony combining sard, a brownish-red variety, with white or black onyx layers, the contrast between bands giving it exceptional definition. That definition is exactly why ancient Greek and Roman carvers favoured it above nearly any other stone for seals and cameos — cutting into the banded layers left a raised pale design standing out sharply against a darker ground, ideal for pressing a lasting impression into wax.

Its name simply combines the two stones that make it up, sard and onyx, and genuine banded material has been worked this way for over two thousand years.
