Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate that forms in distinctive banded layers of pink, red and cream, and its finest source — the Capillitas mine in Argentina — has given it the nickname Inca Rose, tied to the Inca belief that the stone was the crystallised blood of their former rulers. It's genuinely soft for a gemstone, closer to calcite in hardness, which is part of why fine banded specimens are usually displayed rather than worn.

Each band records a distinct pause and resumption in its slow growth inside mineral-rich cavities underground.
