Jasper — The earth's nurturer
For endurance rather than intensity.
Jasper is opaque chalcedony, coloured by whatever minerals were present as it formed — iron for red, clay for yellow, manganese for the patterning in picture jasper. Its varieties are named for what they look like: ocean, dalmatian, leopardskin, picture. Cut a slab of picture jasper and you get what looks like a desert landscape, complete with horizon.
It has been in use longer than almost any other stone. Jasper seals, amulets and knife handles turn up in Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Minoan sites, and it appears repeatedly in the Old Testament as one of the stones of the high priest's breastplate.
Jasper is worked with for grounding, stamina and staying present when things are demanding. It sits with the root. It's the stone for the long stretch rather than the sprint.
