The name comes from Greek apatáō, to deceive, because it turns up in so many colours it was constantly mistaken for other minerals. The blue-green from Madagascar is what most people mean when they say apatite.

It's soft, at five on the Mohs scale, which makes it the reference point for that number in the standard hardness test.
