Orthoceras — A fossil

For staying steady on a straight line, even under pressure.

Orthoceras was a straight-shelled cephalopod, an ancient relative of both the modern nautilus and the coiled ammonite, that lived in the oceans over 400 million years ago, hundreds of millions of years before dinosaurs existed. Its long, chambered shell — the feature its name describes, straight horn in Greek — is preserved almost entirely intact in the fossils sold today, most of which come from a single limestone-rich region of Morocco.

Each visible chamber marks a stage of growth, the animal moving forward into a new chamber and sealing the last one behind it as it grew.

Orthoceras is worked with for steady, forward progress — a reminder to keep moving in one clear direction rather than circling back. It sits with the root and solar plexus.

Sheri chooses every piece by hand, cleanses it, and charges it before it's packed here on the Gold Coast.
