White Sage — The plant that clears the room before you begin
For a space that needs to feel like it's starting fresh.
White sage, Salvia apiana, grows wild along the coastal hills of Southern California and northern Baja California, and it's been used in smudging ceremonies by Indigenous peoples of that region, including the Chumash, for generations — long before it was ever sold in bundles. Burning the dried leaves releases a strong, herbal smoke, traditionally used to clear a space, an object, or a person before something important begins.
Demand has grown well beyond what the wild plant can sustainably support, and several Indigenous communities have asked people to source thoughtfully rather than harvest it themselves from the wild. Organically farmed sage, grown specifically for this purpose rather than taken from native stands, is the more sustainable way to keep working with it.
White sage is worked with for clearing stagnant or heavy energy from a room before ritual, meditation, or simply a fresh start. It's used before rather than during — a preparation, not the main event.
Sheri chooses every bundle by hand, and it's packed here on the Gold Coast.
Burn with care: use a heatproof dish, keep it away from anything flammable, and never leave it smouldering unattended.
