Lepidolite is a lilac mica, and it is a genuine lithium ore — the same element used in mood stabilising medication is present in the stone, chemically bound and not bioavailable, but present. It's one of the few crystals where the folk association and the chemistry point in the same direction.

It forms in flaky, layered masses that catch light like fish scales, which is where the name comes from: lepidos, Greek for scale.

Lepidolite is worked with for calm and for transition — it's the stone most often suggested for stress, anxious spells and difficult change. It sits with the heart, third eye and crown.

Mica is a family of silicate minerals defined by one striking property: perfect basal cleavage, meaning it splits into thin, flexible sheets almost as easily as peeling a page from a book. Before glass was widely affordable, thin mica sheets — sold as isinglass — were used as heat-resistant windows in stoves and lanterns. The family includes several distinct minerals: clear muscovite, black biotite, and lithium-rich lepidolite, all sharing the same layered structure but differing in colour and trace chemistry.

Its sheets are thin enough to be genuinely translucent, letting light pass through in soft, shifting bands.
