Lemurian quartz is recognised by the horizontal striations running across its faces, like rungs on a ladder. They're a natural growth feature — the crystal grew in stages, and each pause left a line — and running a thumb slowly across them is part of how people work with these stones.

They were first found in the 1990s in the Serra do Cabral in Brazil, lying loose in sand rather than attached to a matrix, which is unusual and part of how the name and the mythology attached. The story is that they were seeded by a lost civilisation. The geology is that they weathered out of their host rock.

Tangerine quartz is clear or milky quartz coated in a fine layer of iron oxide, giving it a vivid orange glow that ranges from soft peach to a deep, saturated tangerine. It forms through the same basic process as fire quartz, but the colour typically runs brighter and more uniform, and most fine material comes from Brazil.

The coating sits on the crystal's surface and in its fractures, which is part of why the colour can look different depending on how the light strikes a particular piece.
