Jet — Fossilised wood, and lighter than it looks
For grief that needs somewhere respectful to sit.
Jet is fossilised wood, formed under intense pressure from ancient trees related to today's monkey puzzle, in a process closely related to how coal forms. It's genuinely light for a stone — light enough that its buoyancy in salt water was once used as a rough test to identify it. The finest jet, from Whitby on the English coast, became closely tied to Victorian mourning after Queen Victoria wore it following Prince Albert's death, and it remained the socially expected material for mourning jewellery for decades after.
Warmed by hand or rubbed briskly, it can hold a static charge, much like amber, and the two are sometimes confused with each other despite jet's deep black colour.
Jet is worked with for grounding during grief and protection during hard periods. It sits with the root.
Sheri chooses every piece by hand, cleanses it, and charges it before it's packed here on the Gold Coast.
