Amazonite — The stone of plain speech

For saying the true thing, calmly.

Amazonite is a blue-green variety of microcline feldspar, and its name carries a small mystery: it was named for the Amazon River in the 1800s, yet no gem-quality deposit has ever been confirmed there. The name simply stuck, long after the geography stopped making sense. Most of what's sold today comes from Brazil, Madagascar and Russia.

Its colour comes from trace lead and water in the crystal lattice, and the best pieces show fine white feldspar streaking through the green like veins in marble. It's one of the oldest ornamental stones on record — turquoise-green amazonite beads were found in Tutankhamun's tomb.

Amazonite is worked with for honest communication — the stone people carry into a conversation where the truth needs saying without an edge. It sits with the heart and throat, the two centres that have to agree before honest words come out gently.

Calcite — The stone of gentle clearing

For a stretch that's been heavy, and needs to move again.

Calcite comes in more colours than almost any other mineral — orange, honey, blue, green, optical clear — and each carries its own character. What they share is softness. Calcite scratches with a copper coin, forms in rounded shapes rather than sharp points, and fizzes if you put acid on it.

Optical calcite has a trick worth knowing: look through a clear piece at a line of text and you'll see it doubled. That's double refraction, and it's why Viking navigators may have used it as a sunstone to locate the sun through cloud.

Calcite is worked with for clearing stagnant energy and for renewal — less about force, more about letting things move again. Which chakra it sits with depends on colour: orange for the sacral, honey for the solar plexus, blue for the throat, green for the heart.

Details

  • Mineral family Carbonate
  • Chakra Varies by colour
  • Element Fire, Water

Clear Quartz · Selenite · Citrine

Care

Soft and easily scratched. Avoid water — calcite dissolves in acidic water and loses its polish. Cleanse with smoke or sound.

Rose Quartz — The stone of unconditional love

For the heart, in every sense people mean that.

Rose quartz gets its colour from microscopic fibres of a mineral related to dumortierite threaded through the quartz — which is why the pink is cloudy rather than transparent, and why it ranges from almost white to a deep dusty rose depending on how much of it is there.

It has been carved into love talismans since at least 600 BC in Mesopotamia, and Egyptian women were buried with rose quartz face masks in the belief it preserved the complexion. It is, by some distance, the most given crystal in the world.

Rose quartz is worked with for compassion — and not only romantic. It's the stone people reach for in grief as often as in new love, and for self-forgiveness as often as for someone else. It sits with the heart.

Care

Colour fades with prolonged direct sunlight. Water is safe. Cleanse with smoke, sound or moonlight.

Selenite — The crystal that cleanses other crystals

Selenite is a form of gypsum, soft enough to scratch with a fingernail, and satiny enough that light travels along its fibres like a fibre-optic cable. It's named after Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon — light without heat.

Its practical value is cleansing. Place other crystals on a selenite plate, or beside a tower, and they clear without any further work from you. It's the one crystal that doesn't need cleansing itself, which is why it earns its place in almost every collection regardless of what else is in it.

Selenite is worked with for clarity, peace and clearing stagnant energy from a space. It sits with the crown.

One warning before you buy: this stone and water do not mix.
