Gabbro is a dark, coarse-grained igneous rock that shares its chemistry with basalt but cools far more slowly, deep underground rather than at the surface, which gives its mineral grains time to grow large enough to see with the naked eye. It's a major component of oceanic crust, forming much of the rock beneath the sea floor, though the pieces sold as crystals are surface-collected from exposed formations, largely in Madagascar.

It's sometimes sold in the trade as black granite, though geologically the two are distinct rocks with different origins.

Gabbro is worked with for grounding and quiet inner stability — a foundation stone rather than a showpiece. It sits with the root and third eye.
