Fossil, used generally, covers organic material — bone, shell, wood, resin — that's been slowly replaced by minerals over thousands or millions of years, the original structure preserved in stone even as every original cell is gone. Which minerals do the replacing determines the final colour and texture, from the iron-stained ammonites of Madagascar to the silicified wood of the American Southwest.

Each piece is a direct physical record of something that was alive, turned to rock through a process that took far longer than any human lifetime to complete.

Fossil material is worked with for perspective and patience — the reminder that most transformation happens on a timescale you can't rush. It sits with the root.
