Diopside is a pyroxene mineral that forms in a wide range of colours, though the most sought-after variety is chrome diopside — a vivid, almost electric green coloured by chromium, found mainly in Siberia. Its name comes from Greek dis and opsis, double appearance, for the way its crystal faces seem to shift depending on the angle you view them from.

It often grows alongside diamond in kimberlite deposits, which is part of why geologists use its presence as a clue when prospecting.

Diopside is worked with for compassion in everyday moments — a gentler, more grounded heart stone than some of its showier relatives. It sits with the heart.
