Dichroic glass isn't found in the ground at all — it's built, layer by microscopic layer, with metal oxides deposited under vacuum, a technique originally developed for aerospace optics before glass artists adapted it for jewellery and sculpture. Depending on the angle it's viewed from, the same piece can shift from gold to blue to violet, since the coating both reflects some wavelengths of light and transmits others simultaneously.

No two firings produce quite the same colour shift, which makes every piece genuinely one of a kind despite being manufactured rather than mined.

Dichroic glass is worked with as a reminder that more than one truth can be visible at once, depending on where you're standing. It sits with whichever centre its dominant colour suggests.
