Ammonites were spiral-shelled cephalopods, cousins of the modern nautilus, that lived in the oceans for over 300 million years before disappearing in the same extinction event that ended the dinosaurs, 66 million years ago. What's sold today is the fossilised shell, often cut and polished to reveal the chambered spiral inside.

The name comes from the Egyptian god Ammon, whose statues were depicted with ram's horns — early naturalists thought the coiled shells resembled them. Each chamber in the spiral marks a stage of the animal's growth, laid down in sequence.

Its long, chambered shell — the feature its name describes, straight horn in Greek — is preserved almost entirely intact in the fossils sold today, most of which come from a single limestone-rich region of Morocco.
