Chrysocolla is a soft, blue-green copper silicate, and its name is older than the stone's current use — Greek chrysos and kolla, gold and glue, because ancient metalworkers used a related mineral as a flux for soldering gold. It's often confused with turquoise at a glance, though it's usually softer and more variable in colour, ranging from sky blue to deep teal-green.

It rarely forms in defined crystals, growing instead as smooth, botryoidal crusts wherever copper deposits weather near the surface — the Congo, Peru and the American Southwest are the major sources.

Chrysocolla is worked with for calm, honest expression — the stone people reach for before saying something emotionally loaded and wanting it to land gently. It sits with the throat and heart.
