Opal isn't technically a crystal at all — it's a mineraloid, silica gel that hardened without ever forming a defined crystal structure, which is why it can hold water content within it even once it's been cut and polished. That water is also why opal needs care: dry it out too quickly, through heat or very low humidity, and it can crack. The flashing play-of-colour seen in precious opal comes from microscopic silica spheres arranged in a grid fine enough to split light into its component colours.

Australia produces the vast majority of the world's opal, with Lightning Ridge and Coober Pedy among its most storied sources.

Opal is worked with for emotional depth and amplifying what's already felt — historically considered a stone that intensifies rather than calms. It sits with the crown and heart.
