Gold stone is man-made glass, seeded with fine flecks of copper that catch the light in a warm, golden shimmer. It traces back to Venetian glassmaking on the island of Murano, where the technique was developed by the seventeenth century — the popular legend credits a group of monks who accidentally spilled copper filings into a batch of molten glass and got something more beautiful than they expected.

The copper only crystallises correctly under a very controlled, slow cooling process, which is why well-made gold stone still commands real craft, even without mineral rarity behind it.
