Bloodstone is a deep green jasper flecked with spots of red iron oxide, and the pattern gave rise to one of the oldest legends attached to any stone: medieval Christian tradition held that it formed at the foot of the cross, the green jasper stained by drops of blood, which is why it was once called the martyr's stone. Long before that legend, Babylonian carvers used it for seals.

Its other name, heliotrope, comes from Greek for sun-turning — ancient writers believed submerging it in water and catching the light through it could turn the sun blood-red.

Bloodstone is worked with for vitality and courage — the stone people reach for before something physically or emotionally demanding. It sits with the root and heart.
