Amethyst is quartz turned violet by traces of iron and natural irradiation over millions of years. Colour runs from the palest lilac at the base of a point to a deep royal purple at the tip — and in chevron amethyst, it bands with white quartz in sharp V shapes you can trace with a fingernail.

It has been the stone of clarity since antiquity. The Greeks named it amethystos, "not intoxicated," and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief it would keep the head clear. Medieval bishops wore it on the hand that gave blessings.

Amethyst is worked with for calm and for clear thinking — the two usually arrive together. It sits with the third eye and crown, the centres associated with insight and perspective, which is why it turns up in almost every meditation practice and on almost every bedside table.

Look at labradorite straight on and it's grey. Tilt it, and blue, gold or green flashes across the surface. That flash has a name — labradorescence — and it happens because the stone formed in microscopic layers that refract light between them. It isn't a coating or a treatment. It's the internal structure doing what it has always done, waiting for the right angle.

It was named for Labrador in Canada, where Moravian missionaries recorded it in 1770, though the Inuit had long known it. Their account: the northern lights were once trapped in the rocks of the coast, and a warrior struck them with a spear to free them. Most escaped. Some stayed.

Labradorite is worked with for transformation and intuition — for the stretch between who you were and who you're becoming. It's also considered protective during that stretch, which is why it's chosen at the start of something rather than the end.

Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earth's crust, and the parent of dozens of stones people know by other names — amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, agate, jasper. All of them are quartz with something added or changed.

Its structure is precise enough that we build clocks and radios from it: apply pressure and quartz generates a measurable electrical charge. That property, discovered in 1880, is part of why crystal workers have long described it as an amplifier — the science and the tradition point the same direction, even if they mean different things by it.
