Amethyst is quartz turned violet by traces of iron and natural irradiation over millions of years. Colour runs from the palest lilac at the base of a point to a deep royal purple at the tip — and in chevron amethyst, it bands with white quartz in sharp V shapes you can trace with a fingernail.

It has been the stone of clarity since antiquity. The Greeks named it amethystos, "not intoxicated," and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief it would keep the head clear. Medieval bishops wore it on the hand that gave blessings.

Cacoxenite is an iron aluminium phosphate that grows as fine, golden radiating needles, most famously included inside amethyst and clear quartz from a single mining region in Minas Gerais, Brazil — the same deposit that produces Super Seven. Its name comes from Greek for bad guest, kakos and xenos, because early iron miners considered the phosphorus it introduced into ore a contaminant rather than a find.

What was once treated as an unwanted inclusion is now sought after specifically — the golden starburst pattern is the whole appeal.
